Roles
Participants take on different roles in weekly meetings. Here you will see a description of each role and its importance in making each meeting a success.


Master of Ceremonies (MC)

The Master of Ceremonies (MC) will:

  1. coordinate with sergeant at arms and head timer to begin the meeting on time;
  2. keep the meeting on schedule and on task according to the agenda; and
  3. coordinate with head timer to end the meeting on time.

Prayer Leader (PL)

The prayer leader will:

  1. open the meeting with a brief prayer when called upon by the MC; and
  2. close the meeting with a brief prayer when called upon by the MC.

Visitor

Visitors will be welcomed by FCCW members and invited to do the following:

  1. donate $1 upon arrival for weekly dues and a chance at winning a raffle item;
  2. when welcomed by the MC at the beginning of the meeting, introduce yourself and let us know how you heard about FCCW;
  3. complete a guest registration form; and
  4. when called upon by MC at end of meeting, let us know what you liked about FCCW and what we might do better.

Blogger
Each week we post an FCCW blog entry highlighting some of the main points made by the speaker. The blogger will:
  1. write a few sentences (or more) highlighting some of the main points made by the speaker, and
  2. e-mail the summary to the FCCW president for posting within 24 hours of the meeting.

Head Critique Leader (HCL)

The Head Critique Leader will:

  1. ensure that everyone signed the attendance sheet and specified whether or not they have a manuscript for critique;
  2. refer to the attendance sheet to organize critique groups and assign critique leaders for each group (head critique leader may or may not assign him or herself as a critique leader);
  3. describe the role of the critique leaders when called upon by the MC; and
  4. give attendance sheet to the Vice President of Education (VPE) at the end of the meeting.

Critique Leader (CL)

Critique leaders will:

  1. assure that critique group begins on time and stays on task;
  2. instruct evaluators to write their contact information on each manuscript so the writer can contact him or her with questions, if necessary;
  3. remind writing evaluators to provide writers with both positive comments along with suggestions for improvement;
  4. call upon a reader to the right of the writer (if the person to the right is a visitor, provide instruction to the visitor and give him or her the option of passing);
  5. instruct writing evaluators to speak only when it's their turn;
  6. instruct writing evaluators to refer to line numbering when conducting their critique
  7. instruct writing evaluators to act as editors and avoid asking questions of the author during their evaluation;
  8. remind writing evaluators that every reader has valuable feedback that can help the writer improve his or her manuscript;
  9. call upon the person to the left of the writer to begin the writing evaluation;
  10. instruct writing evaluators to hold on to the manuscript until all participants complete their evaluations; and
  11. with help from the timer, assure that the critiques end on time according to the agenda.

Head Timer

Head timer will:

  1. coordinate with Sergeant at Arms (SAA) to ensure that each timer has a stopwatch or timer;
  2. coordinate with head critique leader to identify individuals to be timers for each of the critique small groups;
  3. serve as a timer in one of the critique groups;
  4. collect stopwatches from timers and return them to the sergeant at arms (or another officer) at the end of the meeting.

Timer

Timers are called upon by the head timer. Timers will:

  1. coordinate with critique leader at the beginning of the critique to approximate how many minutes are available for each critique;
  2. use a stopwatch to ensure that all writers have a fair share of time during the critique session;
  3. coordinate with critique leader to ensure that critique session ends on time according to the agenda; and
  4. return the stopwatch to the head timer at the end of the meeting.

Writer

Any FCCW member may bring a manuscript for critique at a weekly meeting. The writer will:

  1. be an FCCW member in good standing;
  2. be on time for the meeting and sign the attendance sheet at the beginning of the meeting indicating the number of words in his or her manuscript (not to exceed 1,000 words);
  3. include your name and continuous line numbering on the double-spaced manuscript;
  4. bring approximately seven copies of your manuscript and distribute copies when called upon by the critique leader to do so;
  5. provide a brief (less than 60-second) overview of manuscript to be evaluated; and
  6. remain silent during the critique (as if you are an omniscient observer when an agent is reviewing your manuscript with an editor or publisher).

Reader

Reader will:

  1. be sitting to the right of the writer (if the person sitting directly to the right of the writer is a visitor, the critique leader will explain the role of the reader and give the visitor the option to read or not. If the visitor opts out, the critique leader will move on to the next person to the right of the writer);
  2. read the writer's work aloud as the rest of the critique group follows along; and
  3. refrain from making any comments on the manuscript when reading.

Writing Evaluator

Writing evaluator will:

  1. follow along with reader as s/he reads the manuscript, making notes on the manuscript to help the writer;
  2. offer evaluation only when it's your turn to speak;
  3. offer both positive comments along with suggestions for improvement;
  4. avoid asking questions of the author during the evaluation;
  5. offer your valuable opinion and advice to the writer, avoiding self-depracating comments about your editing skills; and
  6. indicate to the person on your left when your evaluation is complete.

Meeting Evaluator

At the end of the meeting, visitors are called upon by the MC to provide an evaluation of the meeting. If there are no visitors, then a member will serve as the meeting evaluator. Each meeting evaluator will:

  1. be instructed by Master of Ceremonies (MC) at the beginning of the meeting to make observations during the meeting about what they like and what they recommend to FCCW members to improve future meetings; and
  2. when called upon by the MC at the end of the meeting, let the group know what they liked most about the meeting and what we might do to improve future meetings.
